  can I get this ability with an item without getting Eden? I want to put off fighting Ultima until I'm 100% done with the fixed encounters.

  Sorry, no. There is nothing in the game (that I'm aware of, nor that is listed here) that will allow you this ability. If you're ready for it now, hurry with your 300 cursed spikes and whatever else you're working toward on the fixed encounters and be done with them.
